I’m just awaiting the delivery of a pair of Fostex FE167’s to built Martins ML TQWT design see - http://www.quarter-wave.com/Project02/Project02.html for those who haven’t see it?
I think I saw a thread where Scott mentioned he’d built 4 sets of these – so this might be directed toward him! 1. There’s no bracing shown on the design. Now I suppose because of the front/back panel tapers that may not be necessary. However would a side-side brace be useful? Also I’m now hooked on bracing the driver front to back – so think I’ll put a small section in to achieve this. 2. Driver sits +30” off the floor, to my mind this is 6-8” below ear level – is this a big issue. Would it be a good idea to have a small base plinth/legs to rise the driver the extra height? Cheers - Phil |

A bracing panel might be useful, though the SPLs this enclosure generates are fairly modest, so it's not especially critical.
I never bothered raising the cabinet, as the drivers are pretty much at my regular listening height. You could always angle it backward slightly -a piece of additional 3/4in material under the front of the base should do the trick. Still, if you're worried, you can certainly bulid up a plinth. I'd make sure it's solid though -resonant cavities under an MLTQWT is not a good plan IMO. |

Hi I built his ML-TL design and as long as you use decent glue they will be very rigid, just remember you can't have too many clamps when you put them together!
As for a plinth to raise them, I would wait and see, I presume you'll listen to them before you apply finishes to the wood etc to make sure they're Ok so judge then if you need a plinth.

Iain – Yep, I wait quite a while before finishing my cabs, in fact Scott’s Small Thor’s currently sit in my livening room in their naked glory (plus grubby finger/glue marks). I have a great supplier of paper backed veneer on the Gold Coast and I just can not decide on the “tree” to use. So yep, I’ll wait, build the speakers as designed and see if they need raising once they are running.

Have you seen these variations in shapes? http://www.t-linespeakers.org/FALL/bipolar/index.html ![]() You'd also be pretty safe stuffing the dimensions into a Metronome shape dave
