I'm thinking about building a fostex backoaded horn enclosure as a next speakerproject.
These 2 apeal to me most: Fostex FE168Esigma backloaded horn FE166E backloaded horn I can't design this project myself (don't have time for that anymore). I would just like to do some nice woodwork and enjoy a nice full-range as a result. Out of these 2, wich would you build and why? Does one of these 2 need the recommended supertweeter to get a satisfying result? |

According to common wisdom - The FE168 recommended is better than the FE-166 horn.
Other things I'd suggest 1) Austin A166 - http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeaker...6Mk2-plans.pdf - IMHO - better than either of those, but slightly more complex in build. Planet 10 has no sims on the austin but my in-room measurements are here - Austin 166's in Austin 2) Planet 10's Hiro - http://www.frugal-horn.com/spawn.html - models well and should be easy to build. Thanks for the links. Your in room measurments look realy good to me. That makes me think about something. Does listening distance and roomsize influence the performance of such a horn alot? (besides the fact that the room is about the most important part of the set togehter with the speakers) I know that with a line aray it's better to increas the distance the bigger the arry gets. Is there such an effect with BLH's too? (listening distance <> mouth area ??)
The round version of the Austin would make a good looking speaker. Are there plans available with the dimensions? Although the Hiro looks like a nice design, they don't appeal to me that much. (visualy) What about the Iris, using the Bruce plans and making it less wide? (as mentioned on the site) |
