On the main list page you can do that.

ETA: After carefully rereading the OP, this isn't the answer to what was being asked, but maybe it will help someone else who wants more POSTS per page. I notice in the subforums that it's 20 threads per page AFTER all the stickied threads are displayed. Surely there's some vBulletin internal option ... oh, never mind.

(my original post)

I'm getting 50 posts per page, there's some option deep in the belly of User Preferences or some stuff...

Here it is: User CP->Edit Options
The third big box is "Thread Display Options." under that is:
Number of Posts to Show Per Page
The options are:
Use Forum Default
Show 5 Posts Per Page
Show 10 Posts Per Page
Show 20 Posts Per Page
Show 30 Posts Per Page
Show 40 Posts Per Page
Show 50 Posts Per Page

Choose whichever one you like. :)

Thanks Cal I'd never noticed that thread count on the home page!!

Just a note as well, what benb has posted is useful for another reason as well. If you ever get the problem where you can't get to the last page of posts in a thread (seems to be a bug) changing the number of posts per page will normally fix it. Sometimes you have to try a few but eventually you will get that last page :)

Tony.
