Is it possible to use a small mains toroid to step up a line level signal approximately 10 times? I've heard from a few places that they have a wide enough bandwidth to work quite well..

I do not know about line level signals but toroids have been used successfully for interstage and output transformers.
Cheap enough to try !! Andy

In the electrostatic speakers forum there are some who claim to have used very low cost toroidal power transformers to drive electrostatic speakers.
I think the line-level source you want to step up will need to be capable of driving a pretty low impedance. I_F |

My preamp has a pretty low output impedance which no doubt will help |
