Here's a funny story I heard at work the other day.

Disclaimer: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!!!!! IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!!

Some fool came into a rental company to rent a microphone. He received the mike and an XLR cable. Apparently he (the fool) didn't know he needed an amp and speakers to make a PA system. He got to the venue and set the mike on a stand. He went off into the wings, cut the male XLR plug off the end of the mike cable, put an Edison (120 VAC) plug on the cable, and plugged it into a nearby outlet, thinking the sound of the singer's voice would "magically" transmit over the building wiring. Needless to say, the 120 VAC instantly fried the mike and nearly electrocuted the fool and the singer.

I heard the same story almost 30 years ago in a music store in West Palm Beach. Except the guy's cousin was an "electrician" so he could wire up the mic no problem. Brought the mic back with an edison plug on the end saying it didn't work. ;)

Probably urban legend....
