What is the actual venue then?, from the map it looks to be in Newbold?.

I live not far from Chesterfield

Default Percieves

Shin

If you did have the Tarantism'ss's'ss anywhere near listenable is there any chance that the (obviously sold) Percieve's could be borrowed from their new owner, it would be good to hear a pair of speakers that generated such a huge thread and interest on this site?

I'm interested in coming but depends if my lil bro goes ahead with the wedding or not.

Nick.

Ay'up Nick,

Might be a big ask to get the poor chap to shuttle them all the way back up here. I'll point him at this thread and see what happens. I agree it would be nice if they could make it though.

Pinkmouse - excellent idea - I intend to be there.

Chesterfield - good choice (i.e. not far from me).

I guess we shall need to make a financial contribution, even if the venue is "free"? Did I miss something on that subject?

Having been involved in User Groups before now, I recommend not diluting the event's focus. Better to have a smaller number talking about the "right" things rather than being overrun with populist wierdos (wierd from our perspective, that is).

Hi Al et al,

Sounds great, cept Shin lives about a million miles away from me. I'm one of those southern fairies who thinks anywhere past Birmingham is a voyage.

However, it would be nice to meet many of you, and I'm sure I could be lured if Shin promises to provide social lubricant in plentiful supply

You measured two drivers for me, so I think I owe you a drink!

You're not alone. This frame of mind apparently translates well to shoes. Apparently buying them in a designer store with pretentious sales staff for £200 more is part of the required experience or something.

Okay guys, my thoughts as they currently stand.

Firstly, I think we need to keep this first event relatively simple. We can always expand for next year, but I would like to grow based on a sound footing.

The big hall will be set up as a test suite, so people can bring along their own kit for measuring, with a rota of volunteers manning the PC, (Ant and Vikash come to mind for that duty! ). Of course, if the weather is good, we could set up outside for a sub shootout as well.

Most importantly, does this sound feasible?

A date. I suggest around the end of July, beginning of August.

Anyone willing to do a presentation, or have ideas on what you would like to hear about? edit: I could do an introductory guide to Eagle if people want.

People to bring kit!
I can offer drawing up the program, and a dedicated webpage once details become clear, and then expand with post event material.

I can also bring measuring stuff, laptop, jig, mic and preamp. Perhaps the Orions as well since I know a few people would be interested in hearing them, and I could also bring some chip amp variations and FR monitors.

I think keeping it simple and informal is paramount. Any time around those summer months sounds ok. I vote SY doing a presentation - on wine.

Ahh yes, free beer is good beer. I certainly don't find it better at quadruple the price.

They might get a little more complicated, but I don't think it'd be too bad.

There are porters all over the university and cameras everywhere (even on the photocopiers). The electronics department (which has a ground floor designed to be opened for displays - e.g. fold away walls) and central hall are right in the centre of the university, there are a few hundred metres to the nearest public road - the public can't wander around the buildings like the can at some other places. So security shouldn't be much of an issue. The students seem to be extremely good in this respect as well.

Tailoring the programme would depend a lot on how things work out. The things people have mentioned so far have sounded pretty close to what I was talking about, giving a quick talk on some element of the design. It wouldn't even need to have this, I just figured it might be easier to present it to the university as a partially educational event to get some free space.
"Audio congress 2007, with speakers and demonstrations"
The university wouldn't deny it if it was just a meetup, but they'd be more likely to charge for rooms.

Needless to say, the university has some fearsomely accurate equipment which they may be willing to let us use with some persuasion.

Just wanted to let you know that I'd be willing to do all the work at this end to check or sort out these things if anyone is interested. It's of some degree of personal interest to me anyway, not just because I like audio either! I'm in the process of setting up a lab outside of the university's own for the students to work on things like valve amps for their instruments, so I think I could tie the two together with an audio congress as a kind of inspirational precursor.

That whole thing works with drivers too, actually anything audio related for that matter.

We need speakers so if the Orions could make it then I think quite a few folks would be very interested in those, including me. Its very likely the best DIY kit out there and certainly the most widely acknowledged.

It would also be good if you could bring along the Greg Ball and ASKA 55N+ amps for a shoot out. I think Al is bringing the Krell KSA50mk2 Clone and I'll bring the NX150 Synergy's. You've also got a fair bit of experience with gainclones so maybe you could bring your favourite out of the few you've built. If all of those turn up then that would certainly get us off to a nice start. Would also be good if someone could bring a Class D and tube design too, I've got a single UcD700ST module which might be useful for a passive sub(if someone brings one) but its not much good for stereo listening.

Agreed, I've never done anything like this, so I think its best left in the hands of people like Al.

I've got a funny but rather disgusting story about just what red wine does to someone that doesn't treat it with the respect that it deserves. Unfortunately I can't repeat it otherwise I'd probably get sin binned.
