Belgian, American and Chinese scientist found a compound that could speed up data transfer to many thousand times faster than possible now with DSL and fiber optics. Said material has the capacity to transfer data at a speed of 150Ghz compared with +/- 4Mb ADSL now. It will take some time and (financial) effort however to change existing infrastructure to the new technology which claims to be 37500 times faster than ADSL. (150000/4)

Translation from Babelfish below:
The untranslateable dutch text, guesses from my german: leuvense - people from a place called leuven KULeuven - a university thuisgebruikers - home users? Eom-modem - ??? nichemarkten - niche markets ----------------- Opening in search to high-speed Internet di 02/01/07 - leuvense, American and Chinese research workers have discovered a new substance which the Internet would be possible much more rapidly will let gone than current technology. Koen Clays (photograph VRT) It concerns a cooperation bond between the department molecular material of the KULeuven, the washington State University in the United States and the Chinese academy of sciences. Those have now discovered an organic material that very photosensitive is and according to experimentings much faster information could forward than the current optical cables. The material exists from a complex system of nitrogening, oxygen and carbon and an opening is able mean for a high-speed Internet. Professor koen Clays (photograph) of the KULeuven confirms the success of experimentings, but warns that there still long to leave is for thuisgebruikers are able enjoy that fast Internet. The new Internet infrastructure will cost much money (photograph VRT) Thus there firstly still Eom-modem must or elektro-optical modulator with the new substance is developed. Afterwards a totally new Internet infrastructure must be developed beside current and that many costs. Clays suspect that nichemarkten will want invest such as the film industry possibly as a first in new technology. Just afterwards that cheaper would become and within range of the ordinary surfers to come. Not super informative. Realise that installed cost of current infrastructure (fiber cable and pathway) is probably around $100/ft, less if large banks of pipes are initially installed and cost is calculated per cable... The fiber cable itself is only a few $ a foot, so.....

Yeah, it's nice, but it's technology that is applied at the backbone and switch level. It won't mean jack at your house.
The technology for real high transfer already exists- optical fiber- and until they start running that to every home, nothing they do to the infrastructure is going to make much difference to you or me. Here we are 60 years later and the phone company still can't deliver decent videophone service... I_F |
