I have a music effect which is designed with a TRS jack on the output. However the manual doesn't say that its balanced. I don't own a scope.
How can I check if it is a balanced signal? |

Hook up to sleeve and tip and you should have signal.
Hook up to sleeve and ring and you should have signal. If there is only signal at tip and sleeve then its not balanced output. |

I would guess it's most likely a send/return loop if it's an effects box.

Thanks pink, but its not that kind of effect. Its definatly output only.
How can I tell that the tip and ring are oposite - i.e. not just the same signal down both? would I get an output from connecting the tip and ring? |

Hi,
measure Vac tip to ring, then sleeve to ring and finally sleeve to tip. Tell us what you get.

Hi,
It seems they have fitted a TRS plug, just to confuse. Look inside the unit. Is the ring disconnected? If yes, then what about swapping it for a TS plug.

There is a DI (clean) out and a "Model" (effected) out
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...tputjacks2.jpg ....................and they're marked Left and Right! I will take the PCB out over Xmas to see how its connected, but its a bit of a chore. Its no biggie. I have a DI box. |

Some effects used the fact that a R-T jack was inserted into a TRS socket turned the device on; unplugging it removed the battery connection. Nice ground currents, not to mention the confusion if you feed it into a balanced input.
