I have a Ratshack SPL meter and want to upgrade to something better. The Behringer ECM8000 is sitting in my PE shopping cart, but I'm not sure what else I need to use it with my computer.
What kind of connector does the mic have, and what cable would I use to plug it into my computer? Does phantom powered +15v +48v mean it has batteries, or do I need to provide power? Do I need a preamp? My soundcard is a Hercules GameTheatre XP, which has a mic preampt and volume control knob, but I hear sound card preamps suck in general. Thanks for any help. Dan |

Hi
Yes a preamp with phantom power is advised. You can roll your own or buy one to get going quicker. Look at Rane.com for products or schematic ideas. Or look at http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=248-606

That mixer would push the price of this project too high, so I decided to search. I found a simple website describing phantom power.
http://www.tangible-technology.com/p...r_connect.html If phantom power is nothing more than 48v dc + 2x 6810 resistors and a 68uf cap, I will diy it using 9v batteries. Dan |

I think for best results you should investigate an external preamp as well. It seems you like to DIY it then? Search at Rane.com for ideas. BTW you need to use XLR connectors.

Why not build your own mic to save money as well? Not that I have tried it yet, but I will soon...

I thought there was more to a behringer ecm8000 than a wand, capsule and connector. I've also seen the aricles and posts about using the Panasonic capsules from digikey, but didn't want this project to end up like most of my other DIY projects (only half finished).
