help please

hey i got a problem, i hooked my subs up to my reciever , i know its was a stupid idea, and now the reciever says protect, and i can get it to go anything, how dod i gety it off of protect by the way its a onkyo tx-sv525 did i fry the thing? please help!!!!!!!

Hi cma,

When you hooked them up, did you parallel the wires and drop the impedance too low? If so unhook them and turn the main power off, not just the stand-by button. That should reset it.

If that doesn't work, tell us what and how you did this in more detail.

As already suggested, disconnect them and see if it works OK then?, but I suspect you've probably blown the amp! - 'protect' usually appears when there's a DC level on the speaker sockets, so they are disconected via an internal relay to prevent the speakers from being destroyed.

thanx for the replies, what happened is my girlfriends subs in her car were not working to i decided to see if they were blown, so not thinking a hooked them up to the reciever in the house. i hooked them up by unplugging the shelf speaker and using the same wire. they worked for like 10 seconds and then stopped working and the reciver says protect. i unpluged the reciever and waited a while and it still says protect, is there a reset button or something or do i need to disconnect all the speakers and try that im running out of options ... or is the reciever fried???????

As I said above, disconnect them and try it again - unplug the amplifier from the mains and leave it a while as well, in case it has to discharge or something. If it still comes up 'protect' then you've probably blown the amp - as is quite possible connecting car speakers to it!.

I notice you say 'subs', I presume that means more than one?, the chances of killing the amp get higher and higher!.
