I think Bryan is talking about local (within USA) grid variations.

Yeah, you are probably right, dhaen
I didnt think about that.

Anyway, some good interesting facts about plugs/outlets
and mains voltage around the world, in that webpage.

For example:
Brazil have two different mains voltages.
Does this mean amplifiers and other electricals
are sold with a switch at the back?
So they can be used everywhere in Brazil?

Brazil:
*127V found in states of Bahia, Paraná (including Curitiba), Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais (though 220V may be found in some hotels). Other areas are 220V only, with the exception of Fortaleza (240V). Outlets (click for more) are often a combination of type A and C and can accept either type plug.

here in northern NJ the line voltage will vary from 107 to 127V -- when i was doing black and white photography i noticed a dramatic difference in printing times -- the incandescent bulb output and color-temperature is related to current!

worse than the voltage variation are the number of birdies and hash on the power lines -- this can wreak havoc with audio and ham radio reception.
