Default Voices vs Music

I am sticking my head over here from the LCD Projector forum because I have an audio question. Is there a device or special feature for receivers that can moderate sound levels? Anytime I watch a DVD the sound levels swing from too low with voices to too loud with music. It doesnt have to be an action flick. The music in Six Feet Under should not shake the walls.

Sounds like you need a dynamic range compressor, more generally known as a 'compander' (compressor/expander). These can raise the volume of the quietest sections while reducing the volume of the loudest.

Many DVD players have these built in, using the information already stored on the disc to determine which parts to alter the volume of. This might be labelled as a 'late night' setting or similar.

yeah I agree with you...

Most of the time when I watch a movie the sound effects and music are wayyyyyyy too loud and the voices are quiet.

So I end up adjusting the volume a lot.

Default Sissies!

You girls are afraid of hearing some dynamic range? Are you sure you've found the right forum to complain on?
Seriously, a movie played as loudly as intended is very involving. And good stereo works great: it doesn't need to be multi-channel, if you sit in the middle.
Afraid of the neighbors?

No I just dont like to damage my ears.. What some people would consider "reference volume" I would consider painful.

How can people listen to music so loudly with headphones for example? What is the point?

All you are doing is ruining your ears sensitivity so next time you want to listen you turn it up even more.

its stupid
