Default arrghhh life is nothing but headaches!(literally)

Well, recently I popped down to a lower res on my monitor, and that allowed me to get a higher refresh rate ( i figured a higher one might help my headaches). so i went from 60hz to 85hz(within limits of monitor at that res.) this helped with the headaches, but i lost ALOT of brightness for some reason... and i also noticed that when i use the degauss function, i get my brightness back for about 5 secnds. I tried going back to 60hz but headaches came back . so my problem is...what is happening? can i fix it? the monitor is a 4 year old dell e770 (i know i know...)

those 19" samsung sync masters are looking very appealing right now...

and pinkmouse, i know you dont advise opening up CRTs, and thats not what im asking, im saying is there a problem inside of here that i could get fixed by a pro? so please dont lock my topic saying its dangerous to play inside a CRT...i already know this, and dont plan on doing it anytime soon.

also another question, would an average quality 27" crt have high enough sharpness and detail to use a 1024x786 or 1240x1024 res(see all my descktop icons, still be able to do word proscessing etc)?

Isn't there an intermediate setting between 60 and 85hz? I think it's 72Hz. Try that, if you can.

Dude, your monitor is on the outs, or Dell ahem... "smiled" on the refresh rate specs a bit. If setting your refresh rate higher than 60Hz causes problems, deal with the headaches or get a new monitor.

Sorry, I wish I had a better answer. Maybe someone else will.

Oh, and I almost forgot... Pinkmouse isn't kidding. Stay out of the monitor case. I have a buddy that works at ARC here in the Twin Cities, and he HATES going near CRT's. He's a VERY experienced tech.

Sorry, no lecture meant, but dead is dead, you know.

Get youself a nice new LCD screen. Some CRTs especially if they are a few years old look almost out of focus compared to a LCD which are very sharp. If your current screen is giving you headaches I'm sure a new one to solve the problem would be worth every cent.

with daily use, a 4 year old monitor is shot anyhow. The guns get used up after a while. It may still be useable but nowhere near a new monitor, likely as not.

xstephanx, I would strongly recommend you to get a cheap 19" Samsung monitor.

I got one, it's 1280x1024 at 85 Hz, good quality and no headaches. Any resolution under that, so 1024x178 and under, you can go higher than 100 Hz refresh rate...

i wanta 19" sync master. Im going to be watching dvds exclusively on my pc soon, so a cheap lcd with a low reponse time is not an option.(dont bother argue with me on this, i cant stand ghosting, and im just going to argue back)
