Good question. I thought that using cad software would be a good idea, I downloaded some freeware/trialware programs and decided that a pencil and paper didn't seem so bad afterall!!!!
I think it would take me longer to work out how to use the programs than it would to simply draw it!

Try sketchup - it may do what you want, and is extremely easy to learn (ive heard)

If you are after 3DSM like functionality and have broadband, you might want to try maya personal learning edition http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml
