my dvd player just packed in after i unplugged the scart lead without turning it off. so i thought i'd investigate by taking the cover off and visually couldn't find anything wrong, however i did notice the drive mechanism looks like it would fit in a pc. it runs off 12volts (typical red/yellow+2 black wires) and looks to have the same kind of ribbon cable..........it even has jumper slots on the back too!

what would happen if i tried rigging it up to my pc?

the dvd player is a smartmedia dvd4032.

DVD players use the same drives as PC ones. It's cheaper than having specially made ones, I suppose. The IDE and power cables are the same, so I wondered if a PC drive could be used to repair a DVD player. It depends on wether there is any driver or other software changes, the stuff the bios reads when it's setting things up. Be interesting to try it.:)
