Normally you simply add the VU meter after the pre amp, so I would recommand you to put it after your volume pot. Used with bridge and resistor to adapt the signal is a pretty straight forward method but I recommand you try ESP Project 55. Easy to assemble and great performance.

Internal to the VU meter is a bridge rectifier with a capacitor across its output. This CAN lead to clipped signal peaks if the meter is across a high impedance source. I suggest you feed the meter with it's own low impedance source (in other words a buffer) seperate from your audio chain.
