malfunctionning tape deck

i will soon making tapes for the car.
My old tape deke is in the basement.
The last time i used it from what i remember, when i was trying the adjust the level it goes from almost noting to overload ( from the vu-meter) and it sound like that. There was always a small place where everything was fine. does it simply need to be clean?
Or is it something else.
I won't use it for listening in the house, just in the car.

This way try to clean the potenciometers that controls recording level just turning it up and down many times.... also put spray oil inside to help clean it...no perfect material but normally works when is dirty or a dot to be in stop position long time.
Inform if works.
I can teach you whole alignment of a tape deck to best performance.
