Default Sub amp qualities

Hi all,
Are there any special qualities one should look for in a subwoofer amp for HT use? Which class of amp should it be etc. I just built a sealed sub and connected the pre out of my Denon receiver to an amp I had lying around. But the output is very low and I have to crank up the volume in the amp and the receiver to get good bass.
Any DIY recommendations would be useful.
Thanks,
Vivek

Class of operation is irrelevant. You want power, stability, and good overload characteristics.

The setup you described sounds simply like you need a bit more gain.

I thought as much. The one I used for testing is a discrete amp. I have an STK 4171 stereo amp. I shall give it a try. But are chip amps good for HT subs.
Thanks,
Vivek
