Pulse charging works very well indeed. I use a 50 watt Solar panel to charge a 4700u capacitor to 20 volts and then discharge it through the lead acid battery.
A pulse then using the solar panel to charge until the battery reaches 14 volts. For a period then the cycle continues during the day at night it switches off. A 555 timer is used, which is connected to the solar panel. It works very well indeed.
