Default Hooking up HiFi Speakers to PC

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a new PC that has 6 channel ac97 audio on board.

Currently i have my audio line out going into my hifi using that as my amp.

What i want to do is throw away my hifi and just use the speakers with my new sound card.

My question is:

Can i hook these speakers into the sound card, the sound card has 6 x 3.5mm inputs and the speakers have 2 wires each for the main part and a single conector for the built in surround(can't remember what the connectors called but the same as with the standard playstation 2)?

Thanks

No. You need an amplifier for the speakers.

The cards outputs are at line level, e.g. similar to a CD player.

Ok that makes a little sense, so pc speakers usually have a built in amp do they? I guess thats why the need power.

So does that mean there's no point having a surround sound card unless i buy the speaker to go with it.

The reason i wanted to hookup stright to my pc was to get rid of my crappy aiwa hifi which only has 2 remaining parts that works and that is the amp & speakers. And i need the space.

Can you recomend a nice small amp to use with my speakers so i can chuck the aiwa.

Cheers
