Cd burning soft? Nightmare!!

In a recent PC upgrade I bought a DVD writer. Software was provided to burn DVD’s.
I installed everything properly and wanted to format a CDRW but failed miserably.
“Format not recognized” was all I got.
I hoped to find the way to format it like InCD or DirectCD. No way. The CDRW was not recognized by the software.
So I decided to install Nero’s InCD for CDRW’s and keep the other program for DVDRW’s.
But, InCD told me ‘A corrupt version of other third party software has been installed…bla, bla, bla” So I couldn’t install InCD.
I deinstalled the DVD software, installed Nero full version and reinstalled the DVD soft.
Again I tried Nero but now it told me the DVD hardware was not supported.
A quick search learned that Nero 6 would probably take care of all my problems.
Cheapest way: about € 35.
Since I bought Nero 5, Adaptec 5, the recent DVD with included software I thought I’d spent enough money to be able to burn at least my backups.
Forget it.
Finally I installed Adaptec Easy CDCreator 4 deluxe version. A very smooth install,
with fatal blue screen IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL…. after two minutes.
I restarted the PC, launched CDCreator who also did not recognize the hardware.
So I tought it was useless to keep that software on the putter and clicked deinstall CDCreator.
Result: unable to deinstall, bla,bla,bla…not found.
I deinstalled the whole thing manually, including all Registry entries and launched CDCreator 5 which is now on the PC.
First thing I tried was CD Label Creator, who quickly prompted me that only the upgraded version would let me make a nice Jewel case. I clicked ‘Upgrade’ and finally my journey ended here: http://www.roxio.com/en/products/

After this more then funny story I only have one question: Is there a free software packet around that would let me make a simple backup and eventually use the DVD for what I bought it? I’ll promise here and now that I’ll never ever buy software anymore if a free legal version exists!!!

Not sure what you're asking... you want to make backups of movie DVDs?

If so, "DVD Shrink" is a good program for that, it extracts the files to a folder on your hard drive, removing the copy protection and compressing it to fit on a 4.7 "GB" disc if necessary.

You then just need any old burning program (I use Nero) to write it back to a DVD.

I used to use adaptec software for burning cd's. Somewhere along the line I started to get buffer underruns and in the end no cd worked...

I nearly bought a new cdburner but instead I tried Nero. Never tried something else since

forgive me of being too simple but..... I do not think that CDRW's can be used with DVD burner for DVD format! My opinion is that you need DVDR's for that, just like I do. I know they cost 10 times as much as CDRW = about $1.00 a piece but still ... it works
Like some one stated here I think DVDshrink is the best and easiest software to read and back up DVD's and it's freeeeeeee.It has a lot of features, some of them are not even documented so you have to read their forum to bet all the info!


By the way: you can always copy dvd's and write them on cdr or for that matter cdrw's but when you write it to cdXX the format changes from dvd to svcd, still acceptable but definitely less sharp than dvd. there are a lot of free programs for this as well (Easydivx and others) . One thing , if the cpu speed is less than 2 GHz , it takes 4 times the length of the movie to write it. The copying to the HD itself only takes 20 to 30 minutes. You loose some movie features such as special angles and sometimes dubbed speech and subtitles.......You only need a dvd rom/player in your pc, the software does the necessary.

As Always: I do not condone copying cd's, dvd's, cassettes, books or for that matter any copyrighted materials used outside your home.



know what you are doing!!!!!! I have seen stand alone players act funny when they get a ripped dvd inside, some dvd players changed religion!

Geez, it sounds like you PC guys have a bit of strggle... on my G4 i just pop the CD-R (or DVD-R) in and it asks me what to do with it -- all built into the OS and very transparent. I use the media almost exclusively for data -- it comes up as a blank disk, i copy what i want to it and then burn it.

As far as recording movies (i don't know about ripping them), it is said that a 1 GHz G4 compresses in a 2:1 time ratio, that's the slowest you can buy these days, a dual 2 GHz G5 has got to be close to 1:1.

i would say that "BAO" is the most powerfull.. all-in-one
freeware alternative out there..

its a only a gui (good one) for cdrdao, mkisofs, dvdrecord.
support lossy:, mp2, mp3, mp4, ogg, mpc, aac
lossless: ape, flac..
(cda, cdda), wav
and also uses replaygain for "normalisation".
