Default How To Save Hotmail Inbox Messages On Hard Drive?

I have a Hotmail address that is getting pretty full.

I would like to save the messages on it, though.

I would like to copy all the messages, put them into a folder and save it to my hard drive.

Does anyone know a convenient way to do that? I don't want the saved messages to have all that extraneous printing.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

set up your hotmail account in outlook express
once you're in OE, go to tools/accounts, click on add, choose mail .. follow steps from there, when it asks for type of account, choose hotmail

In addition to the above, I created a new folder under 'local folders' in OE went to my hotmail inbox within OE that I'd previously configured, selected all the messages i wanted to keep on my hard drive then dragged them across to the local folder.

While your at it ...please go to Extra-Options-Maintenance-Archive.

If you have 2 partitions it is better to make a new folder called Mail on your D: drive ( otherwise make one on C: ).

Change the path in Extra-Options-Maintenance-Archive to D:\mail ) or C:\mail. First copy the long path to Start-Run and OK it, now cut and paste the whole contents of that folder to a temporary directory ( folder ). After you've changed the path which requires a reboot you can copy all the contents to C:\mail or D:\mail.

When you've changed the path to D:\mail you can be sure that your mail will stay untouched after a reinstall ( format C: ) of Windows. And it will be easier to make a backup of the mail in question to any location you like. After a crash or reinstall you can import the mail etc. The solution of Audiofreak is the recommended one for backups of selected mail, mine is for backup of *all* mail, adressbook etc. I would change the path though.

Ha...the old IT rats...

Yes, that's how I do it too and I have my IE cache and swapfile on that separate partition as well, all this under W2K, dunno if Win98 or Millennium are happy with this.

Occasionally, once a month usually, I go to that dedicated E-mail folder select all e-mail + addressbook (*.wab for OE) files ( with e-mail program inactive), zip them and put them on another partition or on a CDR-W.

One caveat with my set up, if I take mirror images of the system I need to include that partition holding the swapfile otherwise I can't log on to the system, admin account or whatever.
At least that's what happened prior to SP1.
Odd but painfully true....the vagaries of Win2K, maybe Win XP as well.

Any of you experienced with Windows Server 2003?

Cheers,

Okay, thanks for the replies. I haven't quite yet had the time to implement the suggestions, but I will certainly try soon and file a progress report. I don't have Outlook Express enabled because I use webmail, which dodges viruses. But I can set up Outlook Express for this one thing.

I would like to thank elizard, Audiofreak, jean-paul and fdegrove for this advice. Will get back to you soon with a report.

Okay, I'm having trouble with this.

First, my mistake. I don't have Outlook Express, I have Microsoft Outlook. I have Windows 98SE and Outlook came with it. I did not set up my Outlook, even though it appears on my desktop, because it appears to be a conduit for viruses.

I have Norton Anti-Virus which works well, but why tempt fate.

Anyway, in past years, I have tried to setup Outlook, which was followed by a long period of mail being transferred from the old Email address to outlook. Nothing like that is happening now.

In fact, nothing at all is happening now, period.

My plan is to setup Outlook to receive Hotmail's mail, then transfrer all of Hotmail's old Emails to Outlook, then archive the Emails.

Then maybe sever the connections to Hotmail, to prevent viruses, until I want to archive again. But I am not worried about that now.

I think I can handle the Archive part. But getting the Hotmail Emails into my Outlook seems to be a problem.

Am I making myself clear? I want to go Hotmail-to Outlook Inbox, (maybe not Inbox, Outlook something), to Archive.

I can't seem to set up Outlook to do this.

Any advice is appreciated. I don't want to get rid of my Emails from diyAudio, but I am overflowing here.

I don't use Outlook but the Express version but AFAIK Outlook is only capable of administering 1 mailclient ( this was the case with the older versions anyhow ).

I appreciate the help so far, but I don't think I am quite getting through. Let me try again.

I have no idea how to do that.

I have a full Hotmail Inbox. I don't want to delete the messages, I want to save them.

Upon perusal of my desktop, I seem to have both Outlook and Outlook Express, (the Express was in a different part of the desktop). I have not set either of them up. In fact, I am not even sure what setting either up would entail.

I see that MS Outlook has an archive facility. Good. I want to use that archive facility for my Hotmail messages.

So, the question is-how the heck do I get the messages from my Hotmail account INTO Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express?

I keep reading all these help files from Microsoft, telling me about all this stuff I am able to do with Outlook or OE, but nowhere is there anything to tell me how to make the transfer.

I do not use Email clients, never have. I just want to use Outlook now to archive my Hotmail Emails by transferring them into Outlook so they can be archived..

Any step-by-step help would be appreciated.

OK, here we go (for Outlook 2002 on win2k, may work on your setup)...

1. Go to Tools->E-mail Accounts
2. select "Add a New Email Account" and click "next"
3. Select "Http" and click next
4. Enter your name and hotmail email id. Also set "Http Mail Service Provider" to Hotmail.
5. Enter your hotmail username (which is typically the hotmail e-mail id) and password and click next.

Now when you check mail, it will download all your hotmail mails to the local disk.

like I said, my Outlook is Outlook 2002 running on win2k, but I imagine the steps should be similar on your setup. I'm not an expert, I don't use outlook. I just tried this now to see if it works.

Hope that helps.
