I came across an article on anodizing in the January 1979 issue of "Ham Radio" -- one of the precautions is that the process releases hydrogen -- this is why outside is best recommended. They also indicate that wool dyes can be used to impart coloration. If there's interest, I'll post it on www.tech-diy.com for a couple days.
