Default VGA splitter... basic question

Hi,

a friend asked me if it was possible to build a vga splitter. Honestly, I've no clue whatsoever about video signals transmission.

Still, I've found those two similar designs:

Monitor Splitter
Driving Multiple VGA Monitors

and it doesn't seem to be rocket science.

I had a question though:

- those schematics shift the input signal, roughly from 0v-0.7v to 0.8v-1.5v. The few specs about vga signals I could find seem to say that the levels of the colors lines matter, with 0.7v full brightness... shouldn't we shift the voltages back or is that dc offset ok ?

Might be a lot easier to just buy a VGA "Y" connector, about $5.00: Newegg.com - 1PC To Dual 2 SVGA VGA Male-to-Female Video Y Monitor Splitter Cable Lead 15 Pin

I have one, and it works fine.

It works fine in most situations (I've got one too) but it reduces max brightness and it's a concern here. ;-)

alternatively, many video cards have two outputs, and can "clone" the same display onto both. That's free....
