Default Good guitar tuners for stratocaster

Hello people,

the title is quite straightforward: I own a Fender Stratocaster, and I am willing to change the tuners because they have become unreliable - they were not anything special either way.

Are there any recommendations by anyone who plays a strat too? I don't mind whether they are particularly "vintage looking" (locking ones are a choice then). I have read good words about Gotoh and Schaller, anyone know and suggest anything else?

To be honest, I have not searched for anything else. Of course there are the Fender ones and I think Hipshot makes too.

Have you used any of the two brands in my first post with success?

To be honest I personally don't play guitar but I've been surrounded by bass and guitar players for the last 35 years and I've never heard anybody mentioning or using anything other than Gotoh or Schaller with regards to aftermarket upgrades.

When I built this guitar from a Carvin kit I used Spertzel tuners. They stay in tune better than others. Sorry the photo doesn't have the tuners shown.

Schaller M6 are good for a Strat.

STEWMAC.COM : Schaller M-6 Guitar Machines

Schaller now makes a locking M6 type tuner too. Some like them better than the Sperzel locking tuners.

Sperzel has been making locking tuners forever.

Many thanks for your answers! I don't necessarily want to buy locking ones, but rumor has it that they are better in terms of tuning stability (hence the name).

Seems like the choice would be between Schaller and Sperzel locking ones. Anything about any Gotoh equivalent?

Yeah Gotoh makes decent tuners too. Reasonably priced. They have a vintage locking tuner. Not sure how that works. You'll have to read reviews.

Also I've heard Hipshot makes very nice locking tuners too. The Grip-Lock open gear tuners look real cool.

Hipshot makes a staggered set too. I guess that allows you to eliminate the string tree on a Strat so less friction and detuning when using a tremolo.
