Smile Turntable types

I am currently doing my research to build a TT. Can anyone tell me what a 'split turntable system' means? I understand what a magnetic floating one is and am considering implementing it in my project.

Thanks in advance

A "Split Turntable" is when the turntable and tone arm are not on the same chassis and are mechanically isolated to "Improve noise levels" so they would say.

Why do some turntables have turned spikes between them? Surely this causes friction? Probably a silly question
