Are there any AJ-1510 or AJ-1510A users out there? I have two of them. One is in perfect condition while the other one has the typical 'bad display' issues.
I have just finished an upgrade kit to replace the old RCA Numitron displays with nicer looking and easier to find LED displays. The kit consists of two boards; one for the displays and the other for the drivers. These boards when installed look like they could have been the original design. In addition, the display is capable of displaying both even and odd numbers. This is another issue of the AJ-1510 that it does not allow the receiving of any 'even' number stations (101.2 MHz). This is not critical in the US, but many other countries do have FM stations on even number frequencies. I have not yet tackled the 'synth' board to accommodate even stations, but the display modification will be required if and when I do. This was a classic FM tuner which was one of the first to feature PLL synthesized tuning. It was featured in many magazines as being the latest 'must have' toy of the 70's. The actual specifications are respectable. So are there any out there? |

I've got one gathering dust for the moment, awaiting a large set of modifications and upgrades to make it more stable. One segment doesn't light on this display, but it's not critical.
Might have gotten around to more of the modifications if the Sony HDR-F!HD tuner hadn't come along. Even without mods, the AJ-1510A sounded good on stations with a directional antenna to minimize multipath. The Sony HD tuner is immune to multipath on HD signals. It's a nifty retro design and I intend to hang onto it. |
