Default Free anti-virus software.

Here's one I have been using for about a week now. Seems to be quite good. Every one of those fake MS Security Update emails seems to have a worm in it just waiting to make your day...
Now there's no excuse.

I am using Antivir from www.free-av.com for quite some time now and it is a good program. To my astonishment I had 3 worms on my pc that weren't detected by Norton Antivirus 2003 ( yes, I updated it that day ). It also doesn't slow down the machine the way Norton does. I installed Antivir on several machines from friends, good practice when MSBlaster was roaming the web. I still can't understand people having broadband internet and no virus-protection

Straight and simple, what else do you want ? One might argue about the GUI but I don't ( still that NT 4 heritage ). No need for filling in name and adress and so on, no registration required.

You do need to configure it however, something one tends to forget. Tests showed criticism towards the config pages. Antivir has 2 configuration pages that can have different settings. Rightclick on the icon in the taskbar for configuring the On-access part of the scanner ( the one that monitors reading and writing of files ) and choose Action-Wipe infected file. Now open the program itself and click Options-Configuration-Repair-Delete without prompt ( is the most effective one and it will not ask for confirmation which comes handy it the machine is infected with more than 1 virus ). Please check all available options, you'll like the possibility of scanning for dialers and /or Possible Malicious Software ( i.e. spyware ). With the options checked as described new infections won't have a chance for touching your precious files

Another good free one is Avast from www.avast.com.

For removing spyware in an effective way ( with a nice GUI and more features ) there is Adaware from www.lavasoft.de. Of course they can be installed both.

Try www.grisoft.com for AntiVirus Group.

It's excellent, completely free, been using it for about three years. Even updates automatically, and scans email as it comes in.

Cheers,

Hugh

Wanted to try it but the registration field was enough for me.

I find an online scanner at www.trendmicro.com quite useful
especially when I'm helping a friend who has got an infected PC...so it's faster...I could've just brought my AV CD...but sometimes I forget....

Online scanners maybe useful for people who like to live dangerously but a installed virusscanner ( which is updated regularly of course ) is a more elegant way of things. IMHO it is better to protect oneself continuously than to undertake action when one is already infected. The heuristic scanner sometimes warns for a virus even when it is not in its database. So you get informed *before* it is too late...

I think a lot of people don't want to spend money on anti-virus software like McAfee or Norton but with free anti-virus programs around there is no reason anymore for not installing one.

I got free anti-virus software (Virex) when i signed up for dot-Mac. Never bothered installing it, because -- except for MS Office macro viruses -- i haven't seen any viruses for over 10 years that would affect my Mac.
