Gents...I was interested in ham as a teen (in the 60's) but never followed through. A question for you though - with the ability to Skype by voice or video to anyone with a PC/tablet/mobile what is left for the appeal of amateur radio? Emergency comms during disasters perhaps?

Doing the above with no wires (Well...) and no TCP/UDP stack :). Video, perhaps not on HF...

The same as with the audio world: do own equipment. Can you make your own tablet? I strongly doubt. It is interesting to see how a simple 6DQ6 can make you speak to an other person perhaps only 100 meters distant.

Some people like VHF/UHF.

Some people like RACES (emergency stuff).

I'm into 75m AM. Boatanchor plate modulatedtechnology OR modern Class E or D transmitters with "software defined" receivers (as an adjunct to older receivers - take the IF out) stand alone, or SDR transcievers (all mode).

Mosfet linears, or glow in the dark big bottles, or Ruskie ceramic tubes...

Also, there is talking to people... and talking to people far away (DX).

The main thing is that radio is magic.
