Default Newbie at Building Amps/Any Decent Books Out There?

I've built my own speakers, which means I have more carpentry skills vs electronic! I was wondering if there is a very well, written, easy to understand book(s) that would help to explain amp building to someone who is new to electronics. I know there are amp kits available but I want to understand just what is going on and one day, build my own. Thanks in advance!

Audio Power Amplifier Handbook by Douglas Self is widely recommended.

Hi!

For a short overview you could refer to

Amplifier Basics - How amps work

by R. Elliot.

But (correct me if I'm wrong) would say that for successfully designing an amplifier from the ground up you will need a profound understanding of electrotechnics, which can be spelled as mathematics, with loads of complex calculations... Was the main reason why I switched my secondary university course from electrotechnics to something not so "theoretical"...

Bye,

Arndt

Default hi

If you are into tubes drop me an email for a list of online stuff.

If not, try the book "Electricity and Electronics", by G Randy Slone(published by TAB)

Same author as mentioned above re amp building but more basic. You need to understand electricity/electronics before you can go into amp circuits.

Cheers

Im gonna recommend the hogh power audio contruction manual too cant go too far wrong with it. Its written in a very understandable way. It also has a number of amp designs at the back. The 11.4 sounds simply amazing and im gonna build the 11.8 soon and can report on that too. Also Slone is reachable at Seal Electronics, ive contacted hima number of times and he's a very pleasent chap, very eager to offer any advice he can.

Another vote for Randy Slone's stuff. I'm reading through his "Electricity and Electronics" (ISBN 0-07-136057-3) and it has some of the more lucid explanations that I've read. Definitely helps when reading his amplifier book.

Duglas Self's book is ok for the basics of a particular design approach. My only reservation is that he describes performance strictly in numbers and takes a somewhat narrow view.
