What amp can I build with these parts?....
I have a bunch of top notch parts and no juice running through them...
Not a lot of knowhow, but interested in learning. I love the Pass gear and have some really nice gear that I normally listen with:
HT setup - Sony TA-N88ES/Sansui SP-300 Horn loaded 12 Cu foot speakers w/ JBL 123A-3 woofers swapped in and k40y9 & ASC 386S recapped crossovers.
Favorite setup - Kora Design 30 EL34 tube integrated through JBL L112s w/ totally rebuilt crossovers - Sprague/K40Y9 caps & removed pots; Also with subbed drivers - Yamaha NS1000 Beryllium Tweeters/JBL 104H-2 mids/JBL century gold 12" woofers. Unbelievable setup!!!
Anywho, that was all so you know my preferences - here's my part list:
2 Yamaha B-1 amplifier transformers - 18 pounds each!!!
2 Holden and Fisher toroidal transformers built into Meridian amps, so the whole power supply is usable.
2 Jamradio 9LZ mini-transformers
2 Tamuraseisakusho 20648 OAY high grade transformers
2 Avel Lindberg toroidal transformers.
6 Sony 2SC895 AP35 transistors
4 Sony 2SK82 VFET transistors
4 Sony 2SJ28 VFET transistors
2 Bendix JAN CEA 6080WB Red Bank vacuum tubes
4 Fisher branded 7868 tubes
2 Matsushita 6BA6 tubes
2 RCA Pentrol 7025 Tubes
3 Tele 12AX7s
2 RCA 6939
2 Amperex 6939
So that's the gear. I am looking to build a detailed but musical amp without sacrificing bass authority. I plan on putting in 4 Nichicon 22k KG Super Throughs. Any opportunity to utilize Russian K40Y9 caps will also be exploited!
Any suggestions on a nice topology? Should I just build a TA-N88 on steroids using huge trafos and caps, with a hybrid tube front end? Should I build the Pass Zen 9? Any suggestions are welcome!
TA-N88B is a class D amp operating at 500kHy, good luck building one from scratch, let alone one 'on steroids'. But, you could build a TA-N7 on steroids with 2 more pairs of 2SJ28 and 2SK82 (available on eBay).
Of course you could build several types of hybrid amps using these parts but all in all you don't really have much more than power supply parts, the rest needs a lot more extra to become a real amp.
