I am new to electronics but very eager to learn, especially related to audio. Above all, i want to be safe. Are there any recommendations on where to start? Is there any literature that teaches to read schematics? Please help.

Most decent sized towns have a community college- you could take some evening classes. The process of learning basic electronics will automatically teach schematic reading.
