Default Function of Subwoofers in X.2 System

Hi folks,

First post here, so be gentle.

I really can't identify a single topic which is appropriate for my question and, as a good forum member, couldn't find an answer in an already existing post. Perhaps someone can assist me, should I have overlooked something.

I have recently purchased an Onkyo Pre/Pro capable of 9.2 channels. The X.2 portion of this was not really a selling point as I am completely without subs in my existing system. What I have been considering making is proper 3-way front speakers with an active x-over approach and housing the low frequency driver in a completely separate housing (ported vs. sealed for the mids and highs). Then by using a Behringer DCX2496, I could cleanse the different signals of the unwanted frequencies and tri-amp.

And now finally to my question!

Will the pre/pro drive the subs by simply outputing the lows from the left and right channels (for example 80Hz and lower)? In other words, can I effectively use the X.2 as a tri-amping assist?

This is especially important for stereo listening (i.e.: 2.2). For proper home theater signals, I imagine there are dedicated subwoofer channels.

I have posed the question to Onkyo, but have not yet received a response. I also assume that this ought not be manufacturer-specific and the knowledge may be available here in the forum.

The follow-up to the above question is whether it would make sense to use a set of B&W 683's (which are passively crossed-over) as the front mids and highs and only build the lows.

So thanks in advance for the feedback!
