To the original question , I don't think you can do it by yourself .
You can send the file to Kindle ,and it will be converted into Kindle propietary file format ,then it would be transferred to your device wirelessly...hopefully
But I don't think they do this routinely .

I hope not as I've taken the plunge and bought one!

Nothing to worry about, here's a quote straight from Amazon's site (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...Id=200375630):

Built-in PDF reader for Kindle 2nd Generation devices
Your Kindle 2nd Generation device can display PDF documents without losing the formatting of the original file. Send PDF documents directly to your Kindle device (via your Send-to-Kindle address), or drag and drop PDF files from your computer to your Kindle device via USB. You can also magnify PDFs by viewing them in landscape mode.

An alternative, yes, but not a good one. You need to use an e-ink display to know what I mean. Reading from an e-ink screen and from a standard LCD screen simply cannot be compared.

Well it's good to know that it will do the intended job! Thanks.
I obviously have a PC.... I have a laptop also but I bought the Kindle in the hope that it would make e-reading a pleasure rather than an eye strain. It will also free me from my seat in front of the screen. Even the laptop is a bit bulky, heavy on battery's and too valuable for use, lets say, in the bathroom... A favourite reading location

I've read a few books on my Sony e-reader, and I find it to be less of a strain on eyes than reading a plain book is (and FAR less than any kind of a LCD screen). Not to mention its far easier to use than a thick, heavy book.

That being said, I still prefer the 'feel' of a book compared to the reader, but the reader is far more convenient.
