Default Simulated 3D audio idea

Hi,

I had a wee thought earlier today about surround sound. I know there are 5.1 and 7.1 etc etc but I was thinking how a custom set up could be made for 3D sound. It's really just an idea I had, no particular plan to build anything. I was only looking for what others thought.

If you had a 5.1 surround setup what if you were to take the surround channels and use a few mixer circuits to blend the channel to say 20 channels. Biasing each channel towards where the original channel would be, effectively interpolating the sound around the space.

I was wondering if:

a) it would work?
b) it there would be any noticeable improvement in the experience?
c) would there be any point?

It would certainly improve the profit margins of amplifier and speaker manufacturers! Regards

More than that: digital modeling software will be improved to simulate 20 points of sound reflection.

I listen to two speakers and have no trouble with creating a soundstage between and beyond the speakers. It all depends on the quality of your system. Regards
