It depends on what you mean by 'high end'. If you mean expensive toys for people who like to impress their friends then it is more like 5% physics, 15% voodoo and 80% marketing. If you mean genuine excellence, then it may be 50% physics and 50% real engineering, and will be much cheaper.

I use a modified CD player with the analogue portion using transformer outputs.
