hho = water.
Water in gaseous form is steam. Just build a heater that turns water into steam. If you want separate H from O then you need two gases as the output. Hydrogen is one output and oxygen is the other output. For this you need to build an electrolysis machine. But, ask your insurance company if they will cover the risk of an oxygen production plant in your car, or in your garden , or in your house. Hear what they say after that long cough/laughter/sound of falling off the chair !

Stoichiometric hydrogen and oxygen mixture can be rather explosive. As others have said, to produce it requires as a minimum the same amount of energy you get by burning it again. System losses make it worse than this. I suppose the only benefit you might get would be if you use solar electricity to produce it - this is (sort of) free.

Yep, "sort of". This may no longer be 100% true, but in general no solar cell ever produces the amount of energy that it took to make it. A useful exception is the solar cell called a tree. It collects for a very long time, then you can burn it to get almost free energy. It can even warm you two or three times over if you have to cut and stack it before burning.

I believe modern solar cells are genuine power sources, although until recently they were just a way of recovering some of the energy used in making them.
Trees are good. Are you suggesting we use wood-burning steam cars? |
