OK who just tried powering up a new amplifier without a variac?

i live in central jersey and right when it happened we got a nice huge spike and alot of stuff shut off--- tv went white.. anyway, in my town, various houses are on or off--im lucky to be on still.. seems like everything north from me is out as well as nyc... cell phones are jammed full and its getting dark soon

i hope all the ppl in nyc find a way home -- being stuck there in complete dark would be a disaster. i am too young to have experienced the black outs of the 70s, but i heard they lasted nearly 2 days--hopefully this wont be a repeat.
