Default Difficulty Installing MathCAD with Win98SE

In order to get Matin King's TL design program, I downloaded the MathCAD demo and then his program from his site.

http://sliunix.lanecc.edu/~jamies/mcexp802.exe
www.quarter-wave.com

When I tried to open his program, this is the screen I got.

I found out later that it doesn't like Norton Internet Security 2003, which I have. So I decided to make a copy of the packed file, move it to another folder, and then uninstall MathCAD and try unpacking it with Norton disabled. This is the screen.

As you8 can see, the Uninstall file is not associated with anything. So I used Dr. Watson to associate with Windows Uninstaller.

When I tried to uninstall it, I got the screen below.

I have no idea where to find that log file.

I could just unpack the copy of MathCAD in another folder, or just delete these files, but bitter experience has taught me that the best way to do any of this is to completely uninstall the program "by the book" if you can. Otherwise, bits and pieces of it are still around, suddenly you need dll. files, and it has a tendency to turn into a mess.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

From what I understand, both MathCad and Martin's program don't work.
Also you can't uninstall because you deleted the files manually.
Try this:
With Ctrl-Alt-Del stop all processes except explorer.
Reinstall MatCad.
Restart
Uninstall MatCad with the proper uninstall file or from Start->Settings->Control Panel-> Add/remove Programs.
Restart
With Ctrl-Alt-Del stop all processes except explorer.
Reinstall Martin's Program
Restart
Uninstall Martin's with the proper uninstall file or from Start->Settings->Control Panel-> Add/remove Programs.
Restart
With Ctrl-Alt-Del stop all processes except explorer.
Reinstall MatCad.
Restart
With Ctrl-Alt-Del stop all processes except explorer.
Reinstall Martin's Program
Restart

It should work now.

Thank you for your reply.

Actually, I understand that with Win98SE, which I have, both MathCAD and Martin King's program do work.

Also, I did not uninstall the files manually. I tried to uninstall it, but the uninstall file won't get it done, even after I associated it with Windows Uninstaller. So I just left it. I want some advice so I do not have delete the files one by one, since that seems to cause problems. I have both MathCAD demo and Martin's program just as I installed and unpacked each.

I will be glad to do what you say-thank you very much for the advice-but I just wanted you to know those things before I start. Does that change anything?

Why didn't you uninstall from add/remove programs?

I have tried the reinstall/uninstall method with a few programs and have only succeeded a few times.

What usually works for me when programs don't uninstall cleanly is to rip all references to the offending program from the registry (back it up first!). Then reinstall.

Norton often causes more problems than it solves, IMO. Keeping your windows patched and exercising caution with opening attachments has worked for me in the past.

Ron:

I did try to remove from Add/Remove programs. If the uninstall file isn't working, you get the same result.

I have little experience going into the registry.

I wonder if I can find that installation log file that the uninstaller is looking for.

You say you associated the uninstall file with Dr.Watson to Windows Uninstaller.
Must have been the Uninst.isu file.
Apart from the fact that you don’t have to associate that file to anything, I can see no way you could associate a file with Dr. Watson to an executable or Windows Uninstaller.
Please, tell us more about how you did that and what you call “Windows Uninstaller”.
What happened is that you probably double clicked on the Uninst.isu file.
Then a screen comes up asking you which program to use to open the file.
There you can associate that .isu file to whatever you want, it want help.
A program’s uninstaller is usually an .exe or sometimes a .bat file, which are both executable files.
An .isu is not executable.
As MathCad doesn’t provide an executable uninstall feature, you have to uninstall it trough Add/Remove programs.
I installed and uninstalled MathCad with no problems that way.
I cannot speak for Martin’s program, because I cannot find it.

Anyway, I still can’t figure out if you get both programs to work or not, since this is the most important.
If you didn't, please try EXACTLY what I posted before.

That's what I did.

I thought that screen with the list of programs to open a file with was Dr. Watson.

Okay, I will try exactly what you posted before.

Thank you for your time.

This is a part I am having trouble with.

When I press Ctrl-Alt-Delete a box comes up with a list of programs running.

Now what? Do I individually highlight all programs except explorer and press "End Task"? I am not sure that is what you mean.

Let's pretend I just pressed Ctrl-Alt-Delete and the box with the programs just appeared on my screen. Can you walk me through this from there?

I'm hopeless, I know, but I really want to get Martin King's program.
