Doreen Bance.... I may be wrong, but did she really design these? I heard she was Ted Jordan's ex-wife.

True, but even before she met Ted she was a competent designer in her own right. I think that the products they worked on were a team effort, how much can be contributed to each is lost in time.

That 20 some years after the split she is building & shipping good product should say enuff in my mind....

Yes, she designed these, although she would be the first to admit that they were based upon Ted's original design (they were both granted the rights to all products after their divorce).

Doreen has always been a manufacturing and production specialist. When she first met Ted he was a designer and her job was to tell him what needed modifying to enable 'the girls downstairs' to be able to build them.

Ted was and is a brilliant theoretician and designer. However, Doreen has introduced a number of innovations of her own. For example, she first started spinning the aluminium in the production process and Ted followed suite. Over the last 15 years or so of Bandor's independent history the drivers have undergone considerable evolution. Certainly Bandor's 50mm units can do things that Ted's 50s never could, especially at the bass end.

I hope that this clarifies.

This off topic thread does catch ones attention.

Last Saturday, I hit a lawn sale that advertised records. The hubby was still in bed but his spouce was setting up an hour early. I inquired about the records and luckily she brought them out for me and I had 1st choice....25 cents apiece. She remarked on my diversity of choice and commented that she was surprised that I knew many of the groups considering my age. The selection was excellent...blues, alternative, classic rock, etc.

She noticed me also looking closely at the turntables...nothing spectaclular but a few of the cartridges were interesting and then commented that she knew that I knew what I was looking for and was truly an audiophile as most people would have glanced only at the manufacture of the turntables. It was at this point we began talking about Thorens etc. I asked how she knew what an audiophile was and where did she acquire the jargon. Apparently she worked 10 years in an audio shop.

It was refreshing to have a discussion with a female about audio. They are rare.

I had been thinking about this for some time. When I have friends over the males often grab the prime listening position and try out the new gear. They have been known to get involved with the sound for a long time and seem to genuinely appreciate the to the imaging and quality. Not the women though. I have never seen a woman sit and listen critically to music and I have never met one that had any idea of the 3D imaging that can be achieved. This observation just sat in the back of my mind until recently when I was reading that hearing probably evolved to do with hunting.

Though I doubt it has ever been tested I suspect that the women’s perception of sound is quite different to men’s. It has been found that women process visual information differently to men and have very poor ability to hold a 3D image in their mind (who’s wife turns the map in the direction of travel to work out where to go?). Maybe the lack of interest in DIY or HiFi in general is biological.

All I know is I can listen critically to a new set of speakers switching AB comparisons and sometimes have difficulty working out which is best ( over time it becomes clearer) Then the wife will walk in listen for 2 minutes, say “gee that ones clearer” and walk off – it’s amazing how often she’s right.
