Default Creating a software vu meter

Hello to everyone, after a lot of searching for a couple days and not getting anything useful can anyone help me/point me to how to get an audio stream while it is in the computer to make a vu meter, and then send the data to an atmega connected up to a couple of tlc5940 led drivers?
My problem is just getting the audio data, as it seems harder than anything, right now I am using ubuntu 10.04 and windows vista.
Thanks in advance for the time spent reading this question.

Looks like I cant edit the message, so here it goes.
I have already an almost function python script using Gstream that I copied from:
Linux Blog: GStreamer with Python in Qt (Learning by Example)

The problem is it doesnt detect any sound signal, any help?
There are some great unix users in the "Linux audio, the way to go?" topic, but I dont want to make spam in there.

A spectrum analyzer and a VU meter are two different animals. The VU meter measures signal level (usually with some averaging or peak hold function). A spectrum analyzer measures the level versus frequency. If the latter is what you want, look at FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithms.

The great problem is getting the sound that is being played in the pc and not so much making the fft and the GUI.
