Hello, new to the forum and a search has introduced me to the fact that you use a lot of inverters...
I have a Cambridge A5 which was running via a Sterling Qpower 1KW quasi sine inverter. The inverter lost a phase and seems to have killed quite a lot of kit although anything with a switched mode supply seems to have survived. To save people searching the profileI ive on a boat with 12v inverted up for certain uses. I just mounted the replacement inverter, a Mastervolt 2k pure sine; if that's any help. Not new though, we're not made of money... Either way, I cracked the case of my amp to find the 2A slow blow input fuse blown; while doing so I popped to fuses past the transformer and checked the rectifier diodes which seemed fine. In the absence of any obvious scorched bits other than the fuse I plugged it in again but it simply blew the input fuse again. We had the boat engine running and there was obviously a sudden significant load on the electrics which lifted when the little blue light went out on the amp ![]() My question is simple... Is it worth trying to fix or is it likely to be uneconomic; bearing in mind it's sub £100 amp. It's just in my repair, renew recycling, sustainable hippy way I'd rather try to rescue it before consigning it to the bin... Cheers all... Forum looks pretty cool if a lot of it's over my head. |

Check all the power transistors. It's common for them to short due to overvoltage.

Welcome to the forum.
I think you'll get more help if this thread is moved to the solid state section. Anyway, I'd keep the amplifier. When you really get into this, you can never have enough amplifiers (I run out constantly)... As an alternative to the amplifier, why not build one designed for 12 volt use? I built this 41Hz Audio:AMP6-BASIC kit it sounds lovely, runs off a 12v DC supply, so you can use it on your boat, without playing with mains voltages. Chris

Would it just be the transistors? The amp overloaded our 3kva peak inverter immediately so it was a hell of a draw through it.
The AMP6 looks good, it'll need voltage regulation as the charging voltage from the PV array that does some charging can get the system up to 17.3 volts once the batteries are fully charged; the alternators charge at 14.4 when the engine's running. I'm sorely tempted but can tinker with the Cambridge. Cheers both! |

The transistors to check are the big ones on the primary side. Also check the varistors on the power supply board if there are any.
