how much wire do you overlap when you are soldering two wires together? do you twist them together real good like?

Soldering mains-voltage connections is a bad idea. Here in
Sweden it is illegal to do so. A solder joint may melt from
overheating in overcurrent situations, the joint will start
to turn into a non-connection and you may get mains-voltage
sparks that can cause fire.

Usually some form of screw-terminal connections approved for
mains-voltage use is the solution.
