I got a 22" LG monitor from our defective bin back when Circuit City was closing shop. I also bought some other things that worked but this monitor doesn't. Well it does actually show the picture but there is no backlighting at all. I can shine a light at an angle and see the display slightly.
I disassembled it and there are lighting tubes that backlight the lcd screen so apparently that is the problem area but I don't know common problems with thes things. I tried searching for bad solder joints, burned components, heat stress etc but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any experience with these things? This monitor would be WAY better to use if I could get it working and I could retire my tiny compaq monitor and free up some space as well. Thanks for any help

The inverters go out quite often. Simple to replace generally. BUT. make sure the new one you put in has the EXACT same part number. many have similar numbers but will not work the same. i found out the hard way fixing laptop screens. eBay search for the parts or call shopjimmy.com

Thanks, I'll check around on that. Are you referring to an IC?
Ok, you must be talking about the entire board. They get kind of expensive considering the cost of a new lcd monitor. I'm going to try and look closer for any faulty components. It would suck if it were a transformer or a tiny IC that has no way of testing lol. So apparently the power supply board puts out the 5v and 15v to run the low level stuff and just isn't cranking out the high voltage for the backlighting. There has to be a common problem with these boards.

Ok, this is weird yet cool. I re-soldered a ton of spots and now magically the monitor works! Not sure if it was any of the larger solder points or the tiny transistors. I'm hoping it wasn't a tiny transistor because they are so delicate and it could be an internal problem with one that could start again after a few heat cycles. Either way its auto searching for channels as I type. I just need to get the cable to connect it to my computer now, its tuning on coax currently.

Lol well I spoke too soon, after the tuning was done I was flipping through channels (picks up more than my sanyo hdtv for some reason) and the picture cut off. Sound stayed working of course like before. Looks like I'm going to get a can of cool it to try and find the suspect component(s).
