Default Anyone use database for electronic parts?

Like any other here, I have a number of resistors, capacitors, chips... etc... and sometimes i buy some parts without purpose, because i dont know that I already have it. I think that some local php/sql database will be nice for better organization, and spending some time.

Anyone already use that?

Thanks

Boggy

I had exactly the same problem so created a simple spreadsheet list of part numbers, quantities and supplier order codes.

I use spreadsheet too, but this tend to be impractical because i have too much components, and too much rows...

I have Farnell, Digikey prices and ord. numbers for some parts, max voltage for caps, max power for resistors, package (SMD/TH)... etc...

I have upto 3 suppliers listed for some parts. Currently running 5 worksheets with over 100 lines on a couple of them. Just keep things in order and use the sort and filter tools and works fine for me

Should be straightforward to knock up a database in either MSSQL or MySQL and access it using ASP or php.

I don't think you really need the relational database facilities though, a flat file will probably be adequate. You could import your spreadsheet into SQL or even MS Access if you just want to run SQL queries against it. I often run queries in SQL Enterprise Manager.

You can get a desktop version of MSSQL (free) and install IIS on your local HD from the Windows install disk if you go the ASP route.
