Default Exploring the Insides of a Sony Shelf Stereo...

Today i Figured i Take a Peek inside my 200 Dollar Sony Stereo System.

The System Boasts a 530 Watt Power Output...but Wait!...that cant Be right?..

the Power Consumption on the Back of the Unit is 270 Watts...

since Were talking Power here....ill Start with the Amplifiers..

This System has Two Amplifier IC's

Both are Sanyo's...The Top Amp is a STK433-090 Which is a Stereo Class AB and Delievers 80 Watts Per Channel.

The Bottom Amp is a STK433-330 Which is a 3 Channel Amplifier (80x3)

im Not Sure if Those are RMS or Peak Ratings...either way its more wattage than i need.

im Guessing the (80x2) goes to the Tweeters...and the (80x3) goes to the Main Woofers and Subwoofer.

all the shelf stereo systems ive had with Auxilary Imputs used the Good Ol' Pair or RCA Imputs....but this one???....noooooo a little 3.5 mm Jack on the Front.

the DMPORT ill Probably never be using...as i Dont have an Ipod.

There are Two Fans on the inside of the Unit..one is Attatched to the Power Supply Transformer...one over the Heat Sink of the Amp..these will Kick in when the Volume is Cranked up...reguardless of weather the speakers are Attached or not..(why does it do that?)

The Display is something Else...it is an LCD one that has Yellowish Text and Backlighting....

its Hard to See anywhere off Axis.

it'd be nice if it had a VFD instead...

Now Lets move on to the Speakers.

dont know what their made of....it appears to be the same Particleboard that most are..its Definetly not MDF or Wood...(what is that Particle Board Made of anyway?)

the Front Panel of All 3 Enclosures are all Made of Plastic, with an a Decorative Panel that Fits over that with a Few Glued in Pegs.

just Wondering will Stuffing the Speakers or Lining the Inside with Dampening Material reduce or Eliminate some of that Midbass Boom?

now..onto the Actually Drive Units....

The Main Speakers have Two 5 and some odd Inch Midbasses..woofers...whatever you want to call em..

they have Blue Paper Cones with Black Rubber Surrounds.....Horay..Rubber...Not Foam.

Vented Aluminum Voice Coil Former...Vented Spider...hmmmmm...thats Kinda Neat.

one of the Two Woofers has a Bigger Inverted dustcap while the other has a smaller

and a Little Itty Bitty Cone Tweeter that has some Plastic Piece over it....that creates Horn Loading when coupled with the Plastic Faceplate.

the Subwoofer has an 8" Blue..(well eh...this one is more of a Purple Color)

With another...(bear with me and Hold your Excitement!)...Rubber Surround!

The Suspension is Stiff...verrrry Stiff....maybe because it has Dual Spiders?

Nice that the their is a Pole Vent...that Actually Suprised me.

yeah..this is all i can Think of at the Moment...hope you Enjoyed.

Is that the same subwoofer I found abandoned in a junk pile in the woods, a Sony SA-WG99? The amp doesn't look all that bad; it's fan-cooled, protected, and does over 100 watts RMS according to the data sheet.

Helpfully, the band-pass filter is before the volume control. So, it appears I can add an input jack near the volume control, and run it full-range from that input. Maybe add a 1/4" output jack so I can hook up a real subwoofer, or a full-range.

Also....the High Pass Filter on the sub i didnt know what to look for.
