That's certainly something I've taken to doing. Most small "subwoofers" sound boomy and horrible until you "sock them"

What, in your experience, do you find to be the best socks for damping a port?

I find those thick wooly socks are best (must be used in pairs).

Chris

PS - those systems aren't cheap over here. Sound awful to me though, when I demo them in shops. Most people say "it's got good bass though". That says it all really.

im Really not sure what my Socks are made of to be honest...i think Cotton...

also another way to make small Boomy Subs sound a tad better is to Extend the Port by sticking a Piece of PVC pipe in the Port.

we Recent Got another Home Theather System

the Reciever and the Speakers are alright...

its one of those newer sony's with a 6 1/2 Subwoofer...though its Passive...and it Really isnt that loud.

so i just Wired the Speaker Out on the Sub to my Cervin Vega's Imputs.

i use the tB in the 8" Sony Enclosure

cant use that sony 6.5" on my Cerwin Vega

the Woofer has a Very Odd Low Ohm Rating of 1.5

the Main and Surround speakers are all 3 Ohms..

Low voltage power supply, so they make the speakers draw more current. Not the way I'd've done it.

Seems like a lot of the newer Sony subs are passive. I'd say it's to do with SAF - a sub with an amp built in will be bigger than one without. In the eyes of most females, subwoofers should be heard, but not seen. Making them passive means it will be smaller.

Yeah i see that most newer sony Surround Sounds have Passive Subs...they Rumble indeed...but compared to Powered Subs they are really Very Weak...especially considering you have a Small 6.5" Driver in a Enclosure Tuned too High, with a Port thats either too short too big or a combiniton of Both.

Also...our New Surround sound is Very Diffrent than our old one.

Both are Sony's

the Reciever on the Old Sony has a RCA LFE output with no sub amp built in...it also uses Standard Speaker Terminals

the new one has a Funky Connector to connect the Speakers to the Reciever which makes it just Aqkward.
