Some of the early low noise VHF transistors were quite fragile and could easily be damaged by static electricity or overload (including nearby lightning). Later devices were more robust. You could check DC voltages in the front end, but bear in mind that some of them may be signal-level dependent. Maybe you will be lucky and it will just be a bias resistor which has changed its value.

If you attempt to change anything in the VHF front end then you must put the replacement in exactly the same place, as stray capacitance can form a significant proportion of total capacitance. Even then some realignment may be needed.

An 'earth' connection could be either for an external turntable, or for AM reception with an external wire antenna. Not relevant for FM.
