It has been years since I messed with these......but as I recall they were merely HV supplies in the 2-5 KV range. Some were sophisticated, others were crude.
Part of the trick is to have very sharp electrodes, and to keep the voltage low enough to not generate too much ozone. Maybe more will come back to me later. Jocko |

"Part of the trick is to have very sharp electrodes, and to keep the voltage low enough to not generate too much ozone."
The other part of the of the trick is to build one to put in the dash of your car, with a green LED next to the electrode, so Fred can point at said green LED in the dark and say "What's this green LED for?" and get living bejesus shocked out of him! Between that and testing the grip limit of your Pirellis during hard cornering, the first time I ever rode in your car, made quite a first impression........ You thought I had forgotten, didn't you, you sadistic Dago? That was about 20 years ago as I recall.... Why didn't I have sense enough to run as fast as I could in the opposite direction? |

I have picked up a couple of 240V operated types at flea markets for a few dollars each.
From memory they are a step-up transformer, followed by a voltage doubler or tripler. Either way they produce high voltage at very high impedence. Breathing moist air toward the needles causes a cool purple corona. I have had my own fun standing in insulated shoes on a rubber mat, and touching one of the electrodes and charging myself, and then discharging to something grounded (room heater) and drawing quite a spark - 6 mm or so. My cat (big black Panther clone) refused to have anything to do with me for a day or two after I offered an outstretched finger - a big spark lept from my digit and into the tip of his nose. Smart cat - I was not able to do that trick to him twice in the one week. Discharging into the tip of his tail was a guaranteed way of getting my legs savaged. My ioniser sat on the mantle piece, and small dust particles would collect below it. These are an effective way of dispensing with smoke, and clear the room air quite well. Eric. PS - I think ETI magazine published a design decades ago.

Once I built one and managed to changed the color of the nearest to it wall from very light yellow to a very dark brown in a few days (I smoke too much).
I believe one should add a fan and some kind of air filter. |

So Phred, did you ever find a way to get back at Jocko for this despicable, cruel and thoughtless (and funny as hell) trap ?. Eric.
