Default LHC is cranking

Each of these 25nS beams has the energy of a 747 in flight. Hopefully they will discover why cables make a difference. BTW they use photodiode detectors made of diamond.

Well, they sort of already saw that cables make a difference. They had a bad splice (bad as in 220nOhm being like a thousand times too high) between two of the 1232 superconducting dipoles and therefore it went up in flames (more precisely: plasma, as an arc developed) when they reached a current of 8.7kA. That was 19th Sept 2008. It was the last coil to test, all the other 1231 made it up to 9.3kA.
They had to repair 53 magnets and replace 900 valves.

Some very nice pics here, also of the damage: Large Hadron Collider ready to restart - The Big Picture - Boston.com

I won't go into the physics of it, but we wouldn't even notice if we did. Near a black hole (apparently), times begins to slow down aswell, so, if it was just above your head, it would be like you were growing again.

Still, being sucked into a black hole and having my component molecules compressed until there's no space between nucleus and electrons is one of my top 10 cool ways to die.
